Cristobal Forms in the Atlantic — But Another Tropical System May Be the One to Watch

The Atlantic hurricane season added another named storm Wednesday as Tropical Storm Cristobal formed over the central North Atlantic. While Cristobal is expected to be short-lived and remain far from the United States, another disturbance farther south is beginning to command much more attention.
That system, currently designated Invest 92L, could become the next tropical depression of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season and may eventually approach the northeastern Caribbean.
For residents along the U.S. East Coast, Florida, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean, Cristobal may be the storm making headlines today—but 92L is the system worth keeping an eye on over the coming days.
Tropical Storm Cristobal Forms Far From Land
Cristobal became the third named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season after satellite and scatterometer data indicated that the system had developed a sufficiently organized circulation and tropical-storm-force winds.
The storm formed unusually far north over the central Atlantic and is already moving rapidly eastward.
Cristobal is not expected to threaten Florida, the Caribbean, or the continental United States.
In fact, conditions ahead of the storm should become increasingly hostile. Cristobal is moving over progressively cooler ocean waters while encountering dry air and increasing vertical wind shear. Those factors should cause the storm to weaken relatively quickly.
Cristobal is therefore expected to be a short-lived tropical cyclone, potentially dissipating within the next day or two.
While Cristobal will officially add another named storm to the seasonal totals, its impact on land should be minimal.
The bigger tropical story may be unfolding more than a thousand miles to its south.
Invest 92L Is Becoming Increasingly Interesting

A tropical disturbance moving westward across the central tropical Atlantic has been designated Invest 92L.
The National Hurricane Center has indicated that environmental conditions are favorable enough for additional development, and a tropical depression could form as the disturbance continues west to west-northwest.
Unlike Cristobal, 92L is traveling through the deep tropics along a trajectory that could eventually bring it closer to the Lesser Antilles and northeastern Caribbean.
That does not mean the system is headed toward Florida or the United States.
It is simply far too early to know.
However, its location, movement, and expected development make it significantly more important to monitor.
Development Comes Before Track
One of the biggest uncertainties surrounding 92L is exactly where its low-level circulation will consolidate.
Until a well-defined center forms, computer models can struggle to determine the disturbance's precise starting position. Even a relatively small difference in where the eventual center develops can produce meaningful differences in track several days later.
Once 92L becomes a tropical depression, forecasters should have a much clearer picture.
The National Hurricane Center would then begin issuing an official forecast cone, intensity guidance, wind probabilities, and detailed forecast discussions.
Until then, individual long-range computer model runs should be treated cautiously.
Dry Air Could Become a Major Factor
Although the near-term environment appears favorable for development, conditions farther west may become more complicated.
A substantial area of Saharan dry air is present across portions of the Atlantic and northeastern Caribbean.
Dry mid-level air can disrupt thunderstorms around a developing tropical cyclone, particularly if the circulation remains broad or poorly organized.
If 92L strengthens quickly and develops a persistent core of thunderstorms, it may be better able to protect itself from the surrounding dry environment.
If development is slower, dry air and wind shear could become much more significant obstacles.
That battle may ultimately determine how strong the system becomes as it approaches the Caribbean.
The Steering Pattern Will Eventually Matter for the U.S.
For now, a subtropical ridge to the north should continue steering 92L generally westward or west-northwestward.
That basic movement could take the system toward the general vicinity of the Lesser Antilles during the coming days.
What happens after that remains highly uncertain.
If the ridge remains strong, the system could continue farther west toward portions of the Caribbean.
If a weakness develops in the ridge, the disturbance could begin gaining more latitude and eventually curve farther north.
Land interaction with Puerto Rico, Hispaniola, or other Caribbean islands could also dramatically influence both its track and intensity.
Those pieces of the puzzle will become much clearer as the system gets closer.
No Florida Threat Yet — But It Deserves Attention
There is currently no defined threat to Florida or the United States from Invest 92L.
That distinction is important.
Long-range tropical forecasting is highly uncertain, especially before a disturbance has even developed into a tropical cyclone.
Still, this is exactly the type of system that should be monitored rather than ignored.
Cristobal may be today's named storm, but it is rapidly heading toward an environment that should bring its life cycle to an end.
Invest 92L, meanwhile, is moving westward across the tropical Atlantic during the heart of August—a time of year when Atlantic hurricane activity traditionally begins accelerating.
The next several days should tell us much more.
For now, the message is simple:
Cristobal poses little concern to the United States. Invest 92L is the system to watch.
